4. The Uncle and The Nephew
Blair hid behind a tree trunk that was thicker than his own body and secretly watched the practice field. In the practice field where the sun was shining brightly and dust was flying around, Edwin and Justin were in the midst of a sparring.
“Wow…”
Thud, thud, thud.
Every time the sound of wooden swords colliding was heard, Blair flinched but couldn’t take his eyes off the two.
Even to a child’s eye, it was clear that the skills of the two were extraordinary. The speed at which the twins moved was much faster than he could follow, but Blair tried to catch every detail by concentrating and focusing more.
He was so immersed in the bout that he opened his mouth in amazement when it reached its climax.
The match between the twins, who had been exchanging wooden swords for over ten minutes, ended with Edwin’s victory.
The twins looked so alike that Blair, even as a family member, couldn’t precisely tell who won from a distance.
But what did it matter who won? Blair clapped his hands as if he had won himself, feeling elated.
“You’re the best!”
The twins, who were wiping sweat and pointing out each other’s shortcomings, turned their heads at the loud noise. They both smiled brightly when they found Blair running around in excitement from a distance.
“Blair! When did you get here?”
“Why are you there? Come here.”
Blair clenched his tiny fists and ran to his uncles.
Edwin and Justin simultaneously dropped their wooden swords, knelt on the ground, and opened their arms. Blair hesitated for a moment as he looked at his two uncles. But his hesitation didn’t last long. Blair soon ran to Edwin and hugged him tightly.
It was a sweet prize given to the winner of the bout.
“Uncle Ed won!”
“Wow, are you praising me because I won?”
“Yes!”
Blair buried his face in Edwin’s embrace and giggled, unfazed by the sweat.
Edwin hugged Blair tightly, his face filled with joy. Justin, who was watching the lovely scene, reached out to Blair but withdrew his hand when he saw Edwin’s sharp look and merely brushed his damp hair back.
“If I knew Blair was watching, I wouldn’t have let you win.”
“What are you talking about? Who let who win? You just lost.”
“Don’t you remember that I won yesterday and the day before? I let you win today because you were losing too much.”
“That’s nonsense…”
“Uncle, uncle!”
The two men, who were bickering, smiled at Blair’s unique childish voice and looked at him.
“What’s up, Blair?”
“Listen to me!”
Contrary to his confident call, Blair hesitated and bit his lip, not speaking right away.
Edwin gently pinched Blair’s chubby cheek.
“What would our Blair want to do? Tell your uncle. Your uncle will do everything for you.”
“Uh-huh, Blair also wants to do that.”
Blair pointed at the wooden sword on the floor with his little fingers.
“Blair wants to do that too!”
Edwin and Justin looked perplexed.
Sharp-witted Blair rolled his green eyes and murmured in a discouraged voice.
“Is it not allowed?”
“Oh, too cute.”
Edwin hugged Blair tightly and buried his nose in the child’s neck.
There was a sweet smell of chocolate and the unique scent of a child on Blair, perhaps he just had a snack.
As the uncle took a deep breath through his nose, Blair wriggled in his arms and let out a pure, cheerful laugh.
Then, he looked at the wooden sword with a gloomy face again.
“Blair also wants to…”
“Um…”
Edwin hesitated to tell him no.
He had always been soft-hearted towards Yurina since childhood, and he was the same with his nephew and niece.
Lizbet, who looked exactly like Yurina, was very lovable, but surprisingly, his heart went out more to Blair. Being his first nephew and having seen him for a longer time might be the reasons.
He wanted to feed him all the delicious things in the world, buy him everything that was good, and do everything he wanted.
If Blair were a couple of years older, he might have been the one to teach him to use the sword and give him the wooden sword, but unfortunately, Blair was still too young.
It was obvious that he would fall over if he tried to grasp the sword with his short, chubby arms.
No, what if he got pricked by the thorns on the wooden sword! His soft, squishy hands could be really hurt even by a small thorn!
But seeing Blair, who seemed ready to cry at any moment, made his heart soften.
It’s not a real sword, but a wooden one, wouldn’t it be alright? As long as he holds him so he doesn’t fall. Even if he does fall, his Dad can heal him with magic, what is there to worry about?
Having quickly come to a conclusion, Edwin signaled to Justin.
Understanding his thoughts, Justin nodded and quickly ran to the storage room where the wooden sword was kept.
Blair, who had quickly figured out what his uncles were going to do, wiped off hia gloomy expression and beamed.
“Oh my, how cute. What did our Blair eat to grow up so cute?”
“I ate choco cookies! And milk too!”
“Oh my, did you?”
Edwin picked up Blair and lifted him high up into the sky.
When he teased him saying that he was flying and puffed air into his plump belly, Blair laughed loudly in delight.
“What is this? How can the two of you have so much fun without me?”
Justin, who had come running with a child’s wooden sword, complained as he wiped his sweat.
Blair’s eyes sparkled at the sight of the wooden sword. When Edwin put him down, he scurried over to Justin.
“Is this Blair’s?”
“Yes. It’s Blair’s.”
Justin held out the wooden sword with a proud look. Even though he had brought the smallest one, it was still a bit big for Blair.
“Here, Blair. You hold it like this.”
Edwin almost snatched the wooden sword from Justin’s hand and took a stance.
Blair, with a serious face, observed Edwin and followed his pose as he handed him the wooden sword. Although he couldn’t properly balance because the wooden sword was too large, his form was fairly decent for his first time.
The fact that he wasn’t immediately hurting his bottom was an accomplishment in itself!
Edwin covered his mouth with both hands as he saw Blair, who was trembling and trying to find his balance.
“Our Blair seems to have a knack for the sword.”
Justin joined in.
“I told you! He’s not a magician, he’s going to be one of the best knights in the Empire!”
If Yurina saw this, she would’ve scolded them, ‘Why are you making such a fuss over a three-year-old?’ but fortunately, or unfortunately, Yurina wasn’t here at the moment. With no one to stop them, the twins’ excitement showed no sign of dying down.
“His stance is firm. So cute.”
“Look at his gaze too.”
Then, Yurina, holding Lizbet, came to the training ground.
“Blair, are you learning swordsmanship from your uncles?”
Blair was excited and boasted.
“Mom, look at this!”
As Edwin glanced at Yurina, Blair wielded the wooden sword and rushed forward.Â
However, he soon lost her balance and fell flat on the training ground. The wooden sword for kids rolled noisily on the ground.
“Uhh.”
Tears welled up quickly in Blair’s eyes.Â
Edwin, taken aback, hurried to rush over, but Reynard, who seemed to have arrived unnoticed, was already lifting Blair into his arms. It was clear he had used magic to rush over.
“Daddy.”
“Does it hurt a lot?”
Reynard examined Blair’s body with a serious expression. He had fallen harder than expected, and his arms and knees were scraped and bleeding.
Seeing the wound on his arm, Blair started to sob even more.
“Uwaaaah.”
“It’s okay. Daddy will make it stop hurting.”
As Reynard whispered, a bright light burst from his hands.
Blair, who had been crying, forgot his tears as he watched the light wrap around his arm and leg. When the warm-colored light completely disappeared, Blair’s arms and legs were clean without a single scar.
Reynard lightly kissed Blair’s cheek, who was gaping in awe.
“You shouldn’t run hastily next time. Got it?”
With his eyes filled with tears, Blair nodded energetically.
“Yeah!”Â
“Good.”
But disregarding Reynard’s words, Blair ran towards Yurina with the wooden sword.
“Mom! Look at this!”
Yurina laughed wryly.
“I guess there’s no denying he’s Carthia’s bloodline.”Â
“Awuu.”
“Look at this, Liz! Brother will protect you!”
Blair, Lizbet, and the twins all smiled brightly. It was a pleasant day.
