A letter for Papa ②

「 Papa, what did you take? 」

「 It’s a letter 」

「 Letter? Is it addressed to Papa? 」

「 That’s right. Nicolad sent a letter to ask about something 」

What Papa received was a letter addressed to him. I never knew that there would be someone that would send Papa letters. Also, to use such a huge bird as a messenger, I wonder what kind of person this Nicolad is?

Is he someone as amazing as Papa? No no, there’s no way there would be anyone as amazing as Papa. My Papa is the best!! I began wanting to brag about Papa whilst in my thoughts, and I looked at the bird like I wanted to brag.

The bird looked like he was confused with the look I was giving it. 

「 Belrena, are you curious about the bird? 」

「 ….. A little 」

「 It’s a familiar. By exchanging a contract with a monster, you can put it under your service 」

「 A familiar!! I’ve, heard of those 」

I got excited after learning that the bird was a familiar. I’ve heard of those from Brother. He said that only strong mages have the power to be able to use monsters. 

「Is it, not scary? 」

「 It’s fine. I’ll give it a beating if it tries to harm you 」

The bird let out a cry of protest hearing Papa’s words. Its voice had a little fear mixed into it. The bird seems to know how amazing Papa is. At the same time, from the look of complaint the bird was giving Papa, I realised that it can understand what we were saying. 

「 ….. Mr bird, I’m sorry, for getting scared. I, want to pet you 」

I don’t know how it will react to being touched, but I felt like I wanted to pet it. Also, so as to not give the bird a bad impression, I apologised. 

It seems like the name of the bird is Tobai. It was the name that was given to it by Papa’s acquaintance, Nicolad. 

I reached for Mr Bird, and it moved its foot forward as if to say it’s okay. I timidly gave it a pet. I’ve never petted a monster like this before. It’s kind of fun and I gave it a ton of pets.

I’ve never had the opportunity to touch a monster. I was happy to be able to touch one like this. And Tobai just let me be. As I got satisfied after a while, I told him「 Thanks. For letting me pet you 」 as I smile. Tobai let out a cry in reply.

I thought of returning to Papa after being satisfied. But looking over, Papa was gone without me realising. 

「 Papa? 」

I wonder where Papa went?

My high spirits from petting Tobai soured in an instant. Tobai panicked at the sight of me becoming depressed from realising Papa was not there. He comforted me with his beak. And I thought that Tobai was really kind, despite being scared of him at first. 

Papa returned after a while. He was holding onto a letter. 

「 Papa, where did you go? 」

「 Ahh. I thought that Tobai wouldn’t do anything to Belrena. So I went and wrote a reply to the letter 」

「 Is that so 」

It seems like Papa went to write a reply to Nicolad. I wonder what is the relationship between Nicolad and Papa? Are they friends? I can’t imagine that, Papa would have friends. But Papa would probably have something like friends. 

「 Papa. Are you friends with Nicolad? 」

「 I don’t really like it but we have a sort of inseparable relationship 」

「 Is he someone you know from long ago? 」

「 That’s right. He’s an acquaintance from long ago 」

Tobai took Papa’s reply and took to the skies, as I had the exchange with Papa. 

He flew in one fell swoop, and Tobai became a dot before I realised. 

I got curious about Papa’s acquaintance from long ago. I also want to know a lot more about Papa’s past. I’ve only known Papa for three months, so it’s unimaginable for me how long Papa and Nicolad have known each other. 

He would definitely know more about Papa, than me. I wonder if I’ll be able to find out more things that can make Papa happy if I met Nicolad? Would I be able to get assistance from him so that I can make Papa say that he’s proud to have me as his daughter?

I thought about all that.

But I won’t put these feelings into words.

I don’t want Papa to come to hate me. Like that girl that took my body, I’ll be the good girl. 

I closed my mouth while thinking that. I had not realised Papa was looking at me while I was deep in thought. 

A few days after Tobai’s visit, Papa suggested something out of the blue. 

「 Belrena, let’s go into town together 」

I was shocked at those sudden words. But although shocked, I nodded, thinking I get to go on an outing with Papa.
