- Chapter 14 - Blocking the School Gate
After explaining the matters related to superpowers and the explosion case to Tan Jing several times, Chen An awkwardly saw off the strange aunt who had been chatting and laughing with his mother. Then he slung his backpack and headed to school.
It was now around noon, the hottest part of the day. However, the human youngsters heading to school, much like him, were huddled together. The boys had their arms around each other’s shoulders, while the girls walked in pairs, holding hands and discussing soap opera dramas.
There were also a few lone youngsters among them, but they mostly ran downstairs to their buddies’ apartments, shouting their friends’ names, waiting for them to come out so they could go to school together.
“Lu Li seems to be the same.”
Chen An rubbed his chin, watching the playful human youngsters chasing and frolicking. “She goes to school alone, whether it’s for morning classes or afternoons.”
The system squatted on Chen An’s shoulder and remarked casually, “Aren’t you the same?”
“Please don’t lump me together with her.”
Chen An made a serious X with his hands. “I’m simply an anomaly with slightly more mature consciousness than human kids. She, on the other hand, is the revenge-seeking editor-in-chief of the primary school newspaper. But speaking of which… as long as you don’t talk about bombs and cram schools, she’s quite a cute person. How could she not make friends? She seems really eager to make friends.”
“In her case, not making friends might actually be a good thing.”
The system mused, “Her ability is passive, and she has no awareness of it. She can’t control it or restrain it. It turns everyone around her into idiots.”
“Is it really that mystical?”
Chen An looked at the system suspiciously. “I’m her desk mate, sitting right next to her. Her own parents probably can’t even do that. But I don’t feel like my intelligence has been diminished.”
“Final exams are coming up soon, you know.”
The system said with a meaningful tone, “If you haven’t been dumbed down, you’ll see it in your grades very soon. If your scores plummet because of her ability, you might have to spend your summer at a cram school.”
Following the system’s gesturing with its toothpick-like arm, Chen An looked at the nearby utility pole, where a bright red advertisement stood out.
【Hua Long Cram School Enrollment Now Open!】
【Either let us nurture your child with the most abundant teaching resources, or let us train your child’s competitors under the same conditions!】
【Address: Fourth Floor of Fengyuan Shopping Mall, turn right at the entrance】
【Registration Hotline: XXXX-XXXXXXX】
“Um…”
Looking at the parents who had stopped under the advertisement, along with trembling human youngsters by their side, Chen An shook his head. “I think I understand why Lu Li is so disgusted by these cram schools.”
With a sigh, he stepped onto the campus and returned to his classroom, taking his seat at his desk.
However, as his classmates, one after another, returned to their seats with a tired appearance from the sun’s onslaught, he quickly noticed something was amiss… Lu Li seemed to be absent?
“Hey, buddy, calm down and listen to me.”
Just as he was pondering what might have happened to Lu Li, the chubby kid and the skinny kid approached him with serious expressions. The chubby one spoke gravely, “You’ve gotten into trouble.”
Chen An rolled his eyes and shook his head. “I don’t think what’s happened to me can be summarized with the word ‘trouble.’ It’s more accurate to use ‘terrifying.’ That’s more fitting.”
“When we were coming to school, we were stopped by a group of sixth graders.”
The skinny kid joined in solemnly, “They were asking about ‘Chen An,’ which class you’re in, and what time you get out of school.”
“Sixth graders?”
Chen An subconsciously glanced at his head. The chubby kid shook his head repeatedly. “Not sixth graders from our school. They seemed to be from Nanfang Third Elementary School, judging by their uniforms.”
“Oh…”
Chen An tilted his head, puzzled. “And then?”
“Can’t you understand? They were asking about your dismissal time. It’s obvious they want to ‘block the school gate’!”
Block the school gate?
Chen An looked somewhat bewildered at his empty seat.
Unlike the cunning and deceitful adult world, the likes and dislikes of elementary school students were written plainly on their faces. Blocking the school gate was the most straightforward expression of this simplicity. But he hadn’t offended anyone from Nanfang Elementary School…
“Moreover, the sixth grader who wants to bet on blocking your school gate is not an ordinary sixth grader!”
The chubby kid clenched his fists, sounding worried. “I saw it with my own eyes. He… he was holding a cigarette.”
“What?”
Chen An exclaimed, “Are you sure you didn’t see it wrong? Could it be that you mistook a ‘strawberry-flavored candy cigarette’ for a real cigarette?”
“You can’t light up a candy cigarette… Anyway, what do we do now? Are you going to fight those bad kids who smoke?”
“Let me think…”
Chen An massaged his temples, his eyes scanning the surroundings. Soon, he locked onto a personal item on the chubby kid’s desk.
“This one’s mine. I’ll use it to teach those bad kids who smoke a lesson.”
“Huh? Isn’t that my drink?”
The chubby kid looked at Chen An in puzzlement as he took possession of his beverage. “Are you planning to offer them iced tea as a peace offering?”
“You blockhead, it’s definitely not that simple!”
The skinny kid slipped his hand into his pocket, took out a few coins, and handed them to Chen An. “Take these coins. If they’re not enough, I have more in my backpack.”
Chen An looked at the skinny kid, who was openly bringing candy into the classroom, with a slightly puzzled expression. He then shook his head helplessly. “I don’t think they’ll like these chocolate coins.”
“Can’t use the coins? How about this…”
The skinny kid took out a few silver coins, wincing as he did.
“Are these arcade tokens? How did you get these?”
The chubby kid asked in amazement.
“Heh, one token got me through the final level of ‘Dinosaur Fighter.’ There were so many left, I just stuffed them in my pocket. By the way, listen to this: someone actually picked up the rock from the side of the road in level four, and it almost got me killed by the boss when I went into a frenzy.”
The skinny kid enthusiastically described scenes of how he defeated various bosses, completely forgetting about the matter of their fellow student being blocked at the school gate.
“Wait a second, we need to focus on Anzi’s situation now!”
Saying this, the chubby kid looked at Chen An hopefully. “You took my iced tea. What am I supposed to do now?”
“Um… how about I buy you a new bottle?”
Chen An looked at these two offbeat guys with a bemused expression.
“That works too, but remember, you owe me a new bottle tomorrow.”
The chubby kid looked at the iced tea with reluctance, while Chen An opened the bottle cap and started tearing the packaging, preparing to create a weapon to deal with the sixth graders. He then tossed the bottle cap to the chubby kid.
“Alright, I owe you one.”
“I want a new iced tea, not just the cap… darn it!”
The chubby kid had a near-teary expression as he held the bottle cap. “Why did you bring me another bottle!”
