Episode 45
Han Mi-soon pretended not to be shaken and reached out her hand toward the coffee but discovered her trembling fingers. Instead of picking up the coffee cup, Han Mi-soon curled her fingers and placed them back on her lap, looking away for a moment.
‘To forget about the engagement…’
There was nothing good about being flustered now. The more flustered she became, the narrower her thoughts became, and her ability to respond promptly decreased. Excitement was rising, and her face was about to get hot.
Until now, she had only been waiting for Tae-seo. She had thought that setting Tae-seo up with In-hyuk would be like attaching wings to a tiger. But now, Kim Mi-kyung was trying to block her son’s future. While Han Mi-soon took a few deep breaths to find composure, Kim Mi-kyung spoke.
“Actually, I was going to tell you after being a little more certain, but I ended up saying it like this.”
If Han Mi-soon had simply talked about everyday matters and left, Kim Mi-kyung probably wouldn’t have mentioned the engagement either. However, without knowing that Tae-seo had become an omega, she was saying to set him up with In-hyuk, so she had no choice but to mention it.
“What does that mean, unnie? To forget about it? Can you do that as easily as flipping your hand? Huh?”
“Tae-seo has someone he’s seeing.”
“Tae-seo?”
Kim Mi-kyung nodded. As much as she had difficulty bringing it up, she felt sorry for Han Mi-soon, but she needed to properly inform her about Tae-seo’s current situation. However, as her heart grew heavy, Kim Mi-kyung’s voice was gradually dying down.
“It wasn’t easy for me to tell you this either. But what’s the point of dragging it out? It’s better to say it quickly.”
Kim Mi-kyung acted as if asking for understanding, but perhaps because she felt sorry, she couldn’t meet Han Mi-soon’s eyes. As she moved her gaze to the coffee she was holding, an awkward silence lingered. The one who broke that silence was Han Mi-soon, who had many regrets.
“If he’s seeing someone, he can end it. Does it make sense to forget about the engagement because of a light, passing relationship?”
Han Mi-soon shook her head as if it made no sense. She even half-turned her body to show her rejection of Kim Mi-kyung’s words.
“Unnie, it’s been nearly 10 years for In-hyuk and Tae-seo. During that time, I watched Tae-seo liking our In-hyuk with a heavy heart. You know that well too.”
“I know. I know that, but…”
Until not long ago, she thought Tae-seo was heartbroken because of In-hyuk. She thought he was still anxious about losing In-hyuk because he couldn’t become an omega yet, and her heart turned pitch black. But how long had it been that she was now seeing Tae-seo smiling at someone else? Kim Mi-kyung also had mixed feelings.
“But why are you doing this now? Did you forget that I paid special attention because Tae-seo liked In-hyuk?”
On the day Kim Mi-kyung told her that Tae-seo had fallen for In-hyuk, Han Mi-soon mentioned the engagement of the two children. Although Tae-seo was the first to like In-hyuk, she said that In-hyuk would like Tae-seo later too, and suggested setting the two children up at an appropriate time. At that time, Kim Mi-kyung had gladly accepted Han Mi-soon’s proposal.
“I feel sorry too. But Tae-seo is even considering marriage with the person he’s seeing now. It’s not a simple dating relationship.”
Kim Mi-kyung paused for a moment and then continued with difficulty.
“The person Tae-seo is seeing came to our house not long ago. Seeing the two of them, it doesn’t seem like a relationship that will pass by lightly.”
“If we’re talking about fate, it’s deeper with In-hyuk. The time Tae-seo liked In-hyuk is much longer. How long has it been with that person?”
Han Mi-soon pressed Kim Mi-kyung even more as she caught her quietly biting her lip.
“Tae-seo doesn’t like In-hyuk anymore? To me, it seems like Tae-seo is seeing someone else for a while because he’s tired, but that can’t last long.”
“That’s…”
“Or did you set a wedding date?”
“It’s not like that.”
When Kang Se-heon came to the house, there was no talk at all about when they would get married. So she couldn’t properly answer Han Mi-soon’s question, but she could be sure that it wasn’t a light relationship. Because Tae-seo was pregnant, Kang Se-heon introduced himself as the father of that child.
Unable to tell Han Mi-soon about Tae-seo’s pregnancy, Kim Mi-kyung ambiguously ended her words.
“Anyway, I don’t think we can do the engagement.”
“How can you do that?”
The price of Kim Mi-kyung not being able to explain everything came back as Han Mi-soon’s resentment. Her voice became incomparably sharp compared to before. Unlike earlier, Han Mi-soon didn’t hide her trembling hands. As she brought over the bag next to her, Han Mi-soon glared at Kim Mi-kyung.
“I waited only for Tae-seo to become an omega, how can you do this to me? I’m really disappointed in you, unnie.”
“Mi-soon, please calm down a little. I’ll explain everything later…”
“I’ll get up now.”
Han Mi-soon got up from her seat. The smile she had when she came in had disappeared without a trace. Han Mi-soon, who deemed further conversation meaningless, turned around after giving her last words to Kim Mi-kyung.
“Unnie, I won’t break our promise. I was too hasty to suggest an engagement when Tae-seo hadn’t manifested yet. I’ll wait.”
“Mi-soon.”
Without giving the secretary outside a chance to intervene, Han Mi-soon abruptly opened the door and left.
“Ah, what do I do about this?”
Kim Mi-kyung sighed deeply, holding her forehead. She hadn’t even mentioned yet that Tae-seo had become an omega. What would happen if she found out later?
***
“I can’t believe anyone other than that unnie would stab me in the back.”
Han Mi-soon clicked her tongue and pouted her lips repeatedly. She had always treated Kim Mi-kyung with a good-natured smile. She had dedicated her time to being close to her, thinking it would help her someday, but this was how it turned out.
This was all because her husband had moved to a mart. If she had been doing well, the words about forgetting the engagement wouldn’t have easily come out of Kim Mi-kyung’s mouth.
It was beyond Han Mi-soon’s expectations that this would happen when nothing had been going her way lately.
“Just because she has a few hotels…”
“Sister-in-law?”
Han Mi-soon, who had been showing her displeasure while disparaging the hotels Kim Mi-kyung ran, turned around at the familiar voice.
“…Unnie.”
It is my sister-in-law.
Seeing Seo Eun-hee, Han Mi-soon forced out her voice. On top of her already bad mood, meeting Seo Eun-hee couldn’t bring out a pleasant greeting. Whether she knew Han Mi-soon’s mood or not, Seo Eun-hee approached with a bright smile.
“What brings you here?”
“That’s what I want to ask. A close unnie of mine is the representative here, so what brings you here, unnie?”
“Ah, I came to see Se-heon.”
Only then did Han Mi-soon nod her head as if understanding why Seo Eun-hee was at this hotel? She knew well that Kang Se-heon frequented this hotel for business meetings. She thought that since her nephew was busy, her sister-in-law must have come this way. Han Mi-soon bowed her head with only that much thought.
“Then please go in, unnie.”
She wasn’t in the mood to have a conversation with anyone, including Seo Eun-hee. Han Mi-soon gave an appropriate greeting and turned around. She didn’t want to run into another familiar face and exchange meaningless greetings. As Han Mi-soon slightly lifted her bag to reach for the sunglasses she had put inside…
“Are you very busy now? There’s something I want to ask, do you have a moment?”
“Usually I’m not, but today I’m busy. Give me a call.”
To arrange a blind date for Kang Se-heon later, it was best to part on good terms with Seo Eun-hee. Han Mi-soon gently pushed her away while promising for next time, but Seo Eun-hee muttered regretfully.
“Really? I was going to ask if you knew a child named Tae-seo, but I guess it can’t be helped. See you next time.”
“Who, Tae-seo? Yoon Tae-seo?”
“Yes, that Yoon Tae-seo.”
“Of course, I know him well.”
Han Mi-soon answered indifferently while taking out her sunglasses, then suddenly turned to look at Seo Eun-hee.
“But how do you know Tae-seo, unnie?”
“Is that child an omega by any chance?”
“He’s still a beta. That’s why we’re waiting for him to manifest as an omega… Huh?”
“Then is it a different kid? No, the name Yoon Tae-seo isn’t that common.”
The Tae-seo that Seo Eun-hee had met was the same age as In-hyuk, attended the same university, and seemed to know In-hyuk. She had asked thinking that Han Mi-soon, In-hyuk’s mother, might know Tae-seo. Han Mi-soon, who had picked up the words Seo Eun-hee had let slip, gradually became serious.
“Wait a minute. What about Tae-seo?”
Han Mi-soon grabbed Seo Eun-hee, who had turned around with the sunglasses still in her hand. Now it wasn’t Seo Eun-hee who was regretful, but her. She was also curious as to why, of all people, her sister-in-law mentioned Tae-seo.
“Se-heon said there was someone he wanted to introduce, so I came, but the name sounded familiar. I pondered over it and remembered that you had mentioned it a few times, so I asked.”
“Se-heon and Tae-seo?”
“Yes. They’re the same age as In-hyuk too, so I asked, but it seems to be the right person.”
The more Seo Eun-hee spoke, the more Han Mi-soon’s mind became tangled. It was strange in the first place why Kang Se-heon of all people was introducing Tae-seo. But there was something even more important than that.
“Unnie, you just asked if Tae-seo was an omega, right?”
“Yes.”
Han Mi-soon ruffled her hair with her complicated feelings. Tae-seo was clearly a beta. She had just met with Kim Mi-kyung, but she hadn’t heard anything else. But why…
Watching Han Mi-soon’s expression become complicated, Seo Eun-hee somewhat caught on and tried to piece together the situation.
“They told me he was an omega, so it seems he must have manifested recently.”
Han Mi-soon abruptly stopped moving and then turned to look at Seo Eun-hee.
“…Tae-seo manifested?”
